How Riverdale Sitter Network Started
As someone who has worked as a nanny and babysitter myself, I know how personal it is to welcome someone into your home and trust them with your children. I think as kids, we never truly appreciate or understand all the work our parents do for us until we experience it ourselves. Working as a nanny and babysitter allowed me to see firsthand just how much working moms and dads have on their plates, and how much stress can come with worrying about every aspect of childcare. I always felt for the parents I worked with and wanted to help in any way I could, even if it was just making their lives a little bit easier.
After graduating from undergrad, I decided to leave my nanny and babysitting jobs behind. But even after I stopped working as a caregiver, parents would still ask me if I knew anyone they could hire who was like me. I ended up spending quite a bit of time referring people and connecting families with caregivers I knew. Then one day, while I was occasionally babysitting, I was watching The Baby-Sitters Club with a really sweet little girl I was caring for. She told me that I should start something like that myself. A little lightbulb went off. I started thinking about what that could actually look like. I went through different ideas, business models, and names until I eventually found the one that felt right: Riverdale Sitter Network.
What started as a simple conversation with a little girl turned into something I genuinely wanted to build.
I knew how overwhelming it could be for parents to find childcare. I also knew how much time it could take to scroll through applications, talk to different caregivers, interview people, and hope you found someone who was the right fit.
But I also wanted to do something for caregivers. I've always been very lucky with the families I've worked with. The families I cared for were warm, friendly, supportive, and genuinely good to me. I often struggled to relate when other nannies and babysitters told me stories about difficult experiences with the families they worked for. It made me realize that finding a good family can be just as important for a caregiver as finding a good caregiver is for a family.
And that's really where Riverdale Sitter Network came from.
A little bit of my own experience, a lot of conversations with parents and caregivers, and one very unexpected suggestion from a little girl while we were watching The Baby-Sitters Club. ❤️
